Old Coffee Machines are interesting. The first ones were simple pots. They were flat on the bottom and had a pour spout on top. Inside the pots were trappers which held the grinds back from the coffee when poured. They were very similar to modern Turkish coffee pots that use a standard stovetop burner.

Over time many types of coffee pots were invented and tested. They varied in size and shape, mainly with the goal of keeping the grounds out of the poured coffee.

Most of the old coffee pots, starting around 1600 AD, were primitive and had a bulged out center. Their pour spouts came out of the center, instead of the top.

In 1780, a new type of coffee pot emerged. It was a tall pot, oval in shape. Inside was a small filter shaped like a tea ball, but was made of a material like cotton. The pour spout was at the bottom. This worked pretty well until the cotton or other material used began to degrade and flavor the coffee. Also, the different materials that were tried out didn't always work with the grind size. In other words, sometimes the water didn't pass through the filter easily enough to make good coffee. If the grind was too course and water passed through the filter too quickly, very little flavor was extracted from the grind leaving a weak brew.

Twenty-two years later, France developed an old coffee machine with metal filter which sort of worked but left quite a few grinds loose and floating around.

Next a new coffee innovation was developed which compressed the coffee, without damage to the grinds. It was called the Rammer.

France also created the vacuum pot. Coffee grounds were kept at the top while boiling water and steam rose to make contact with the coffee grounds. A separate cool area of the pot (where pressure was less) would create a vacuum, in contrast to the expanding heated steam. This vacuum would pull down the liquid coffee (once it met the coffee grounds) and into this cooler area. Some of these pots were made of metal, some of glass. Sometimes the glass would break because they were not made as well as pots are today.

There is an old coffee machine known as "balance-beam" vacuum pot too. It was different in that it turned itself off using the balance beams as a switch, when the coffee was done.

In the 1930's the percolator pot came into widespread use in the U.S. Unfortunately, this pot continually boiled the coffee, overcooking it.

France came out with the French Press, also known as a coffee press, or a plunge pot. The French Press is still the preferred way to brew coffee today. It uses a metal filter on the end of a plunger. Coffee grounds and hot water move freely while brewing. When the coffee is done brewing. The plunger, which has a filter with holes in it, is slowly pressed down. The filter catches the grounds and pushes them to the bottom while the holes in the filter allow the coffee to move through.

Germany created the drip version of the electric coffee maker in 1910. It heats the water, brews the coffee, and turns itself off when the water is used up. It uses a paper filter that holds coffee grounds while heated water drips on it and through it into a container.

What our
customers say,

To all you coffee lovers out there... I have been drinking coffee for over 43 years and have never had a better cup than this brand of Kona Coffee. Immediately, I could taste the difference in what I had been drinking and this cup of perfection was worlds apart from an ordinary cup of coffee. It's like I had been consuming an acidic, watered-down version of coffee and not realizing it. I like the fact that the growers take great care in producing only the finest coffee bean. This coffee is now the only coffee I will drink! Once you have experienced this delectable, flavorful cup of coffee, I can promise you there is no settling for less than the best.

Fast delivery. Coffee arrived in reusable airtight bags that "really" seal. This coffee is fresh. I know that it is fresh because it is not bitter or flat when it is brewed. You don't need sugar or milk with this coffee. It tastes good just the way it is.

Tom - Oakley, CA

Just wanted to thank you on the excellent coffee.
I ordered some dark roast a month ago and gave it a try at work on my little coffeemaker. The office smelled great and the taste was outstanding. I did give away a few cups because our office coffee is garbage but I am a bit greedy with my supplies when it comes to that kind of quality. I gave folks your site but I think other folks can get their own.

Good stuff.

I absolutely love your coffee! I've never been a big coffee drinker until now. I can literally sit at my desk and drink cup after cup after cup. Not only does it give me a burst of energy, but it smells amazing and is very delicious. Definitely has a sweeter taste than any other coffee I have ever tasted. Usually, most coffee is sort of bitter. Not this coffee. The Kaluli coffee is wonderful! I love it.

Elizabeth - Raleigh, NC

I've been a coffee drinker for years now. When I lived in the Bay Area I had a favorite cafe that made the best coffee and I was a loyal customer. Recently, I found the tastiest coffee I've ever had and the best part is, I don't have to go to a cafe to find it. I can order it from the comfort of my own home! It's the Ferrari of coffee. It's so full of flavor, it makes Starbucks and Coffee Bean's stuff taste like bitter water. You've got to try a cup for yourself.

Tyler - New York City, NY

My name is Lara and I would like to tell you how great I think the Kona Coffee is. It is so great that I normally drink 2 cups of it. Love it! Love it! Love it! Thank you!!!

This is my day. Bweeeep! Bweeeeep! Bweeeeeep! Goes the alarm. The shrill sound is a cruel reminder that there is no early morning forest bird waking you today. Wap! Yes, that was your head hitting the cabinet doors since you're stumbling towards the grinder with your eyes closed. You finally reach it, you pour into the grinder the most delicious coffee beans ever tasted. You turn on the grinder and it makes short aromatic work of your favorite, the dark roast. Only the dark roast will do. Especially on cold, dark mornings. 4 agonizingly slow minutes later, the steaming, fragrant elixir is in your cup. A sip or two into it, the alarm is forgotten, the head is not throbbing, and you swear you can hear those birds! You silently promise yourself that the next time you travel to Kona, Hawaii; you're bringing an empty suitcase to fill with bags of this coffee! At the end of the cup, the world is just a bit brighter, maybe a bit warmer, and you decide sandals should be perfectly appropriate business attire for the day ;-) Thanks for the great coffee!
