Turning Forty in Kauai

Some years ago now, my husband, young son and I were in Kauai celebrating my 40th birthday. We had selected a very nice restaurant near Poipu to have dinner, pulled into the parking lot and was getting out of the car when my, then, six year old son took it upon himself to let everyone know my age. "Hey everybody (within earshot of our car)," he yelled proudly at the top of his little, bless-his-heart, lungs, "My mom's turning the big 4---0 today!" I looked around to see if anyone heard his announcement. Sure enough, there were many people (one would have been too many for this shy, not-yet-ready-for her-forties, woman) that heard. The stranger's reactions were perfect though. Their gentle, accepting laughter and "Isn't that the cutest thing" whispers, eased my momentary suffering.
